Color Play Friday - Beach Days!

Welcome Everyone!

It's another edition of Color Play Friday! Plus, this week we are working from another one of my photos!

First though, for those of you who are new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week she provides a challenge photo as inspiration and then the CPF participants create a fabric bundle and a color palette based on the photo. Fun, right?! Also, it's open to everyone; so if you are interested in playing along you can find out more info by clicking on the CPF button on my sidebar.

So... As I mentioned before, this week's photo is one of mine!

It's called Beach Days... because I can't remember which beach it was! My family loves to do beach vacations on the California coast and we usually try to hit up a different beach each time we go. What I do remember is the heat of the sun and the feel of the cool breeze; the sound of laughter and the waves crashing; building sandcastles and attempting to fly a kite. Most of all, I remember having a great time with my family.

Here is my take on this photo.

This photo has so many fun and bright colors. Like a lot of you, when I think of bright colors, I think of Alison Glass. She is a master at creating bright, saturated fabric collections. For me, using her prints was a forgone conclusion for this week's CPF. However, I did challenge myself to use fabrics from her different collections. It made picking fabrics a bit more difficult, but really, when you are virtually playing with Alison Glass fabric, how difficult can it be? Am I right? I'm curious to see how many of the other CPF players used her fabric as well.

Color Play Friday - Crab Shell

Hello and Welcome! It's Color Play Friday!!!

Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week she provides a challenge photo and then each CPF participant creates a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo. It's a lot of fun and it's a great way to explore working with color. Also, it's open to everyone! So come play along! You can get more info on how to join in by clicking Lorinda's CPF button on my sidebar.

This week's photo reminds me of sunny beach days and getting sea sick while crabbing off the coast. True story.

Here's what I came up with.

I think this was the hardest CPF for me so far. I mean, I really struggled with this one. I just could not find the right greens. I wanted them to be more "seaweed-y." But what can you do. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them to. Oh, and is anyone surprised I sneaked some blue in there?

First Flimsy Finish of 2017

Hello everyone!

I sewed! I actually sewed!! You see, it's been a while. I think the last time I sewed anything was at the beginning of November. I have to laugh because right around that time my old rotary cutter gave out and I went out of my way to go to the shop and get a new one because I simply couldn't be without a rotary cutter! You know what I mean?! Then I lost all sew-jo and that darn new rotary cutter is still in the packaging. Eeep!

So yeah... I finally finished the last few seams on this flimsy.

This was a long time WIP (work in progress) and it feels really good to move it to the flimsy pile. For you non-quilty folk, a flimsy is a completed quilt top that is just waiting to be quilted up. This top makes 9 flimsies that are hanging out and waiting to be quilted. Add that to the 25 WIPs that I have in various stages - everything from fabric pulls to completed blocks - and to the 3 long term scrappy projects I've got going on and I've got a lot to finish up! I think this will be the year of WIP!

Phew! I'm tired just thinking about it all. I don't think I'll be starting any new projects or buying any new fabric for a while!

Color Play Friday - Airlie Gardens

Welcome Everyone! Friday is one of my favorite days of the week because that means it's time for another edition of Color Play Friday!!!

Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week she provides a photo as inspiration and then the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on that photo. It's a lot of fun and participation is open to everyone. You can find out more about how to play along by clicking Lorinda's Color Play Friday button on my sidebar.

This week is especially fun for me because we are working from one of MY photos!

I took an iPhone photo of this water feature in Airlie Gardens a few years ago. Airlie Gardens is a beautiful, historic public garden in Wilmington, North Carolina. The garden was first developed by Mrs. Sarah Jones. Modern mythos contends that she and her husband are the infamous Joneses from the saying, "Keeping up with the Joneses."

Here is my take on the photo.

I knew immediately that I wanted to capture that shade of green apple that peeks through the cutout in the planks. From there, I picked out at least a dozen other shades of green and thought I'd do a funky palette of all green (hello St. Patrick's Day)! Then, though, I noticed that gorgeous teal blue on some of the leaves and the palette took on a life of its own. I just can't  resist a good blue! From there I went on to choose fabrics starting with the green apple color. Wouldn't you just know it? I happened to find the exact shade of green apple in the Oval Elements line by Pat Bravo... and the color of the fabric just happened to be called "Green Apple!" Clearly it was meant to be, lol.

Color Play Friday - Wildflower Garden

Hello and welcome back to Color Play Friday!!!

You may have noticed that Color Play Friday (CPF) took a little break over the holidays but I'm happy to say that it's back in full swing! For those of you that may be new, CPF is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week she provides a challenge photo and then all the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo. It's lot of fun and a great way to stretch your creativity. Also, it's open to everyone! You can get more info on how to play along by clicking the Color Play Friday button on my sidebar.

This week's photo is called Wildflower Garden.

It has me dreaming of Spring. In reality, we're expecting snow over the weekend! Brrr.

Here is what I came up with this week.

I really wanted to challenge myself to work with as many purples as possible this week. I like purple but I find the color rather difficult to work with. I have a hard time finding the right shades and tones in the fabrics that are out there. I'm mostly pleased with what I came up with for the week but I wish I could have gotten more out of the color palette. I do love the floral print though. I think it's just perfect for this photo!
