Color Play Friday - Backyard Rest

Hello everyone! It's Color Play Friday!!!

For those of you who may be new, Color Play Friday is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine and Trina from In an Otter Life. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle inspired by the photo. It's a lot of fun and I encourage you to play along!

This week's photo is all about the dog days of summer.

Dog days of summer... see what I did there? :p

Seriously though, it's the middle of November and I still have to use my ceiling fan to cool down the bedroom. Anyone else feeling like Game of Thrones has been lying to us all along and that winter is never coming?

Here is what I came up for this week.

This is the part where I usually expound on my process or what I thought about the photo. This week, I've got nothing to say. Nada.

...

Umm, I love blues and greens and I love dogs. That's all I've got. Lol.

Color Play Friday - Macy's Escalator

Hey everyone and welcome to another edition of Color Play Friday!

For those of you who are new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine and Trina from In an Otter Life. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo. It's a lot of fun to play along and everyone is welcome to join in!

The photo for this week is called Macy's Escalator.

I love that pop of bright yellow combined with the rich colors in this photo. Here is what I came up with.

Even though I love the colors in this photo it was a really hard challenge for me this week! I had a tough time finalizing a color palette. I kept going back and forth between two different palettes but neither palette felt complete. I finally had to just step away. I did some chores around the house, I ate lunch, and when I came back I started over. I think it all worked out in the end. It always amazes me that some palettes can come together with ease while others take a lot of work!

80's Geese Charity Block

 Hello everyone!!!

Last month I was presented with the amazing opportunity to test a new block called "80's Geese" by Diane from From Blank Pages fame. I've tested patterns by her in the past and they have all been marvelous. Seriously. Marvelous! If you've never worked from one of Diane's patterns, you need to! Okay, enough fangirl-ing.

The best part about this block is that Diane asked some of her testers to make the block for a charity quilt! I love that so much and here's why. I have never sewn or quilted for charity before but recently I have felt the call on my heart to do just that. I was looking for a way to give back when this opportunity came along. Of course, I jumped at it. The lovely Jill from Crafty Giraffe (@crafty_giraffe on IG) will be putting together all the blocks into a quilt top. Here is a sneak peak of the blocks so far (I totally swiped this picture from Jill's IG feed.)

This quilt is going to look so good and I can't wait to see it when it's finished!

Here are the details:

The block is a 12" finished, paper-pieced pattern by From Blank Pages called 80's Geese. The pattern comes in 4 different block sizes - 6", 9", 12", and 18". It is available as a PDF purchase from Diane's pattern shop. You can purchase each size separately or you can purchase the bundle with all four sizes. And if you sign up for Diane's newsletter you get a nifty 20% off discount code! The pattern is chock full of goodies. It comes with coloring sheets, design ideas, cutting templates (my personal favorite), and cheater templates.

Color Play Friday - Library of Congress

Happy Color Play Friday everyone!

It's getting close to the end of the month, closer to Halloween, and closer to the start of the busy season! At least it's the busy season for me! I hope I can keep up with Color Play Friday!

For those of you who may be new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun weekly challenge hosted by Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine and Trina from In an Otter Life. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo. It's a lot of fun and it is a great way to explore color. As always, it's open for everyone to join in!

The photo this week is from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

This was a fun photo for me to work from. I read Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol over the summer. The Library of Congress and several other prominent D.C. locations are featured in the book. So it was a lot of fun to compare this photo (and other photos) of the library with the pictures I formed in my imagination. I've never actually been there and somehow I think the photos don't do it justice!

Here is what I came up with.

This was one of the fastest CPF's for me! I couldn't believe it. Everything just came together so fast. The color palette has an earthy funk to it. I don't think I would have ever tried to put these colors together but they play with each other so well. For the fabric bundle, I like to start with what I think will the the most difficult color to find. That way I get the hardest part done first and it's easier for the rest of the bundle to grow from there. I don't have a lot of luck with olive greens so that's where I started. After looking at only a few fabrics I found that great focus print and as a bonus it had that slate blue shade in it as well. Things just fell into place after that.

Eerie Nights Blog Hop - The Witching Hour and a Giveaway!!!

Hello and welcome to the Eerie Nights Blog Hop!

The Eerie Nights Blog Hop has been going on for a few days now and there have been lots of spook-tacular projects so far! There are also giveaways! Yes, giveaways!!! What's a Halloween themed blog hop without a few treats (no tricks) to give away? You can find the giveaway and links to all the hoppers at the end of this post!

When I heard that Marian from Seams to be Sew and Amy from Sew Incredibly Crazy were hosting a Halloween themed hop, I knew I had to join in on the fun. A huge thanks to those two ladies for all their hard work organizing the hop and to the sponsors!

Here is my quilt, The Witching Hour!

When Mr. 123 Quilt saw this quilt he thought it looked like a time portal and he suggested the name The Witching Hour. The witching hour is said to be the time of night when witches, goblins, and ghouls are at their most powerful. It's the time of night when ghosts can pass between worlds.

I don't know if I believe in ghosts... maybe they exist, maybe they don't. A few years ago, Mr. 123 Quilt and I were sightseeing and we came across an old cemetery. No one was around but the ornate iron gates were open and just inviting us to come in and look around. We spent 20 minutes or so wandering about. At one point, I stopped in the middle of the aisle to peer down at an old, faded headstone. I felt Mr. 123 Quilt come up behind me and put one hand on my back and the other on my arm and gently move me to the side, as if I was blocking the path and he wanted to get by. I said, "Oh, sorry, Honey," and looked up from the headstone only to discover that Mr. 123 Quilt was on the OTHER SIDE of the cemetery! We were the only two living people in that cemetery so I don't know who or what touched me and moved me aside. I've got chills just thinking about it.

Do you have a ghost story? I would love to hear it!

Anyway, back to my quilt. I knew that I wanted to make a Halloween quilt this year, so participating in the hop just seemed like a natural fit. I definitely wanted to make something simple and subtle; something that clearly had a Halloween theme but didn't scream werewolves and witches and vampires, oh my! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) I found these great orange and black polka dot fabrics and I knew exactly how I wanted to use them.

I added some solid black to the bundle and used a white for the background.

In keeping with the subtle theme of the quilt, I quilted some very simple echo lines to really highlight the design of the quilt. For the quilting, I used Essential Thread from Connecting Threads in Black. I did all the piecing using the same thread in White. I really love their thread. It works wonderfully in my machine and I don't get a lot of lint (and no, that's not an affiliate link and I'm not getting paid to say that). I think this minimal quilting works really well in this quilt and I'm extremely pleased with how it came out!

I used the orange on black polka dot fabric for the binding. I think polka dot binding is great... in theory. In reality a striped binding or a solid would have been better. I think the dots were just a bit too large to really get a good polka dot effect. Also, my binding seemed incredibly narrow this time around. It's the same binding I always do so I'm sure I'm just imagining things. Next time though, I think I will try to use a wider binding.

As part of the hop, we were asked to not only show a new project, but to show some of our favorite holiday decorations. I've been just a bit sneaky and I've already shown mine! So there is a trick in this post! Scroll up a few photos. See that little white pumpkin? I love little ceramic pumpkins and I've started a small collection of them. I try to get a new one every year, but I haven't gotten one yet this year. I need to get on that! Unfortunately, most of my little pumpkins are in storage but I do have one more to show you.

This one is sitting on my pile of trimmings from my quilt!

I hope you enjoyed reading about The Witching Hour! I really had a lot of fun making this one.

Color Play Friday - Wild Horses Leader

It's Color Play Friday - one of my favorite days of the week!

Color Play Friday is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Trina from In an Otter Life and Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week they provide one of their photographs as the inspiration photo and then the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo.

Fridays are already awesome but, for me, CPF is the icing on the cake. I love the weekly challenge and I love seeing what the other participants come up with.

This week's photo is called Wild Horses Leader.

Thanks to Google, I discovered that this steel sculpture is the first horse in a series of horse sculptures in Washington. The public Wild Horses Monument is installed on a ridge overlooking the Columbia river and is accessible via a short hike up the hilltop.

Fun fact about me - I love road trips. Love them! I love the freedom of the open road and the sense of adventure. I especially love discovering "hidden gems" like Wild Horses Monument. If I ever road trip through this part of the country, I would love to stop here.

Here is my take on this week's photo.

I love the earthy tones that came out of this photograph. This is definitely not my go-to color palette but I rather like it. I can envision a quilt in these colors. The green was the hardest print for me to find this week but in the end I think it's my favorite one of the bundle.

Color Play Friday - Mukilteo

Hello and welcome to another edition of Color Play Friday!

For those of you who are new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Trina from In an Otter Life and Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week they provide one of their photographs as the inspiration photo and then the CPF participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based off the photo. It's a lot of fun and the more people that play along, the more variations there are. And that's the best part, seeing what other people come up with!

This week's photo is called Mukilteo.

Mukilteo is a waterfront city in Snohomish County, Washington. In 2011, it was ranked number 9 on Money Magazine's top 100 places to live. (Thanks wikipedia for the info!) I believe this photo is of the lighthouse that was built in 1906.

Here is my take this week.

I really love all the blues and greens in this photo. Very evocative of sea glass, yes? I think so. I can just imagine walking along the shore and finding bits and pieces of old sea glass mixed in with the sea shells. The palette was very easy to come up with this week. I debated putting some brown in there for a bit of contrast but in the end I decided against it. I just couldn't find any sandy browns that I liked.

Color Play Friday - Fall Walk

Yay for Fridays and yay for Color Play Friday!

For those of you who may be new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Trina from In an Otter Life and Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the participants create a color palette and a fabric bundle based on the photo.

Fall is definitely the word around here!

Here is the weekly photo.

Lorinda and Trina were taking a walk together last weekend when they spotted this gorgeous display of Fall leafage. They knew it just had to be a CPF photo challenge!

Here is what I came up with.

Somebody get me hammer... cause I think I nailed it! Seriously, I am so in love with this bundle. It just makes me swoon every time I see it. Can't you just see a fall quilt made with these fabrics? The gears in my head are turning and I'm going to get myself in trouble by adding extra projects to my "to-do" list.

I will say that the purple thoroughly surprised me. Somehow I never think of it as a Fall color but, lo and behold, it is! It took a while to find just the right purple fabric but the search was worth it. The yellow was just the opposite. I found way too many excellent fabrics in that ochre-y yellow that it was hard to narrow it down to just one fabric! The rest of the fabrics were fairly easy to pick out.

Hello Fall and October Goals

Holy cannoli!! It's October already!

Photo via Pexels.com - (CC0)

Fall is definitely my favorite time of year! I love the crisp air, the smell of burning leaves, and the flavor of pumpkin in everything! Okay, maybe not everything but definitely in my Quick and Easy Pumpkin Muffins. These muffins make an appearance every year around this time.

In fact, I just rummaged through my cupboards and it turns out I have all the ingredients I need to whip up a batch! Yum! This will be the first batch of the year. I usually like to wait until I'm 100% sure it's Fall. The summer has been lingering and lingering and lingering. Almost like that Cranberries song. But come on, it's October already! It's time for the muffins.

While I'm baking I might as well work on some of my top priority projects. I actually have a lot of projects to work on, some big and some little, but there are a few that are just more important than others right now. So, this month I'm going to try and limit my goals and maybe, just maybe, I'll actually complete them all!

OCTOBER GOALS:

1.  Later this month I'm participating in the Eerie Nights Halloween Blog Hop hosted by Seams to Be Sew and Sew Incredibly Crazy. I have a design planned out and I have fabric but that's it so far! So, yeah, this is definitely my top priority.

2.  Next up I have this fun little stack of solids and gingham that I've been toying with for a while now. And I do mean a while! At this point I have half a quilt top put together but I just need to buckle down and sew those last few rows. I'm afraid that if I don't get that done soon I'll be flirting in the danger zone of quilting. We all know the danger zone. It's that nasty point in the quilting process where you start to fall out of love with a project. Personally, I think the danger zone should come with warning bells and flashing lights but it doesn't. It's sneaky. And if you find that you've crossed it without knowing, your project is doomed to the WIP pile forever!

(Also, is it just me or does everyone start singing Kenny Loggins when they hear phrase "danger zone?" It may just be me. I feel the need, the need for speed.)

3.  The third project that I really want to work on this month is the Meadow Mystery Quilt QAL hosted by Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs. Every year Cheryl hosts a free mystery QAL and you can read about my experience with last year's Midnight Mystery quilt in this post. I was really sick last year so I didn't play along monthly but put the whole thing together at the end of the QAL. This year I really wanted to participate in real time, but um... I'm already a few months behind. The fourth month of instructions will be posted tomorrow so I don't have too much catching up to do. So far, all I have is my fabric pull. Better get crackin'!

Fabrics A-D in order from top to bottom.

I think that's all I'll list for now. It's nice to have a small "to-do" list. Everything seems more achievable this way, lol. I'll keep you posted on the progress and don't forget to check back later this month for the blog hop!

Color Play Friday - Boys on the Beach

Hello and welcome to Color Play Friday!

Color Play Friday is a fun, weekly challenge hosted by Trina from In an Otter Life and Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the participants create a color palette and coordinating fabric bundle based on the photo.

This week's Color Play Friday (CPF) is a very nostalgic one for me. It's called "Boys on the Beach."

I used to spend my summers in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and this photo brings back all the amazing days spent walking the shoreline under a cloudy sky. As I sit here, I can smell the salt in the air. Can you smell it? Excuse me for a moment while I reminisce.

...

...

...

Okay, I'm back! Here is what I came up with for the week.

This color palette just screams PNW to me. You've got the grey for the cloudy skies, the blue for the water (most of it raining on you, lol), the lush greens of all the vegetation in the area, and the earthy browns. I've always said that if I could pick one place to live, it would be there. I'm trying to get Mr. 123quilt on board with the idea!

Anyway, this was one of those bundles that was both easy and hard at the same time. It took me a while to finalize my color palette but once I got it locked in, it was smooth sailing from there. Almost every fabric I picked this week was the first one I looked at, so choosing the fabric went really fast. It was as if all the perfect fabrics were right there waiting for me.

Berryburgh Block in the Wild

Hey everyone!

You may remember that last week I took part in the 2016 Cloud9 New Block Blog Hop and that I introduced the Berryburgh Block along with a tutorial.

Well, Berryburgh Block has been spotted in the wild! What????

Susan from Desert Sky Quilting made my block! I am beyond thrilled that somebody liked my block enough to actually make it! You should definitely click on her link so you can read more about her experience making the Berryburgh Block.

I absolutely love that Susan changed the construction of the pinwheel to a method that works better for her. I am a huge proponent of doing WHAT WORKS FOR YOU! So three cheers for Susan!

I also love the red, white, and blue color scheme she went with. Maybe it's because I've been wanting to make a patriotic/holiday quilt for a long time. Probably, (okay really and truly) it's because she made my block to be part of an American Hero quilt!!! That means it will be made into a quilt and donated to a wounded warrior. Seriously, all the good feels right now!

========

If you want to make my block you can find the tutorial here. I would love to see it so be sure to tag me on Instagram (@123quilt) and use the hashtag #BerryburghBlock123quilt. Or you can email me (sarah123quilt@gmail.com) with a photo of your block or a link to your blog post so I can link up to you!

Color Play Friday!!!

Happy Color Play Friday everyone!!!

For those of you who are new, Color Play Friday (CPF) is a fun weekly challenge hosted by Trina from In an Otter Life and Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine. Each week they provide one of their photographs as inspiration and then the participants create color palettes and fabric bundles based on the photo. Fun, right?!

This week's photo is called "Naked at the Airport."

Now wait a second... Get yer' minds out of the gutter. We're talking about the juice brand here! :p

Actually, if you were naked at the airport, would getting through the security line be any easier???

Here's the photo for the week.

See? It really is just juice!

Here is my take on this photo.

I really struggled with this one. I started out feeling completely inspired by the gorgeous pink color gradient on in the bottle. I tried to base a palette around that while including a bit of pale yellow as a whimsical nod to the strawberry banana flavor of the juice but it just. wouldn't. work!!! That's how it goes sometimes. Sometimes you just can't force an idea - as hard as you might try. You have to stop, take a breather (or eat a snack in my case), and start from scratch.

So, here is my new palette. I think this palette is sleek, modern, and a bit feminine. The best part is that the orange of the juice cap managed to sneak it's way into my bundle in the Katarina Roccella print.

Cloud9 New Block Blog Hop - Berryburgh Block and Tutorial

Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the 2016 Cloud9 New Block Blog Hop!

Many thanks to the hop hosts Yvonne @ Quilting Jetgirl, Cheryl @ Meadow Mist Designs, and Stephanie @ Late Night Quilter for all their hard work putting this hop together! I also want to give a HUGE thank you to Cloud9 for generously sponsoring the hop!

Cloud9 provided each participant with 5 fat quarters of their gorgeous, organic Cirrus Solids in Amazon, Sky, Shadow, Lilac, and Iris. With over 60 participants in this block hop, that means that over the course of three days you are going to get a ton of free block tutorials.

There are a few rules of course. Don't worry, they're for the block designers, not you! Each participant in the hop was asked to create a 12 1/2" (unfinished) quilt block using at least three of the five solids provided. Not too hard, right?

I had never worked with Cloud9 fabrics before this challenge. I have to tell you how impressed I am! They are made with 100% organic cotton and they are SO soft! Seriously, I think I annoyed Mr. 123quilt when I was making my block because every step of the way I made him feel how soft the fabric was.

Also, I freely admit to petting my block every time I walk by it. It's currently sitting on my ironing board waiting to be packaged up and shipped out to the hop hosts. They are going to take all the participant blocks and turn them into charity quilts. How awesome is that?!

Introducing... Berryburgh Block!

Berryburgh Block

A Quilt Block By: Sarah Smith from www.123quilt.blogspot.com
Featured in the 2016 Cloud9 New Block Blog Hop

General Notes:
  •  Berryburgh Block is a 12” finished (12 ½” unfinished) quilt block.
  • ¼” seams are used throughout the construction of this block.
  • This block is named for the entirely fictional but picturesque town of Berryburgh that is known for its wild berries that grow along the town's wooden fences.

Materials Required:

  • 1 – FQ (fat quarter) each, Cirrus solids in Amazon, Sky, and Shadow.
  • Basic sewing supplies (sewing machine, thread, scissors, cutting mat, ruler with a 45 degree angle mark, rotary cutter, marking pen or pencil, etc.).

Cutting Instructions:

From Amazon:
Cut (2) 4” x 4” squares
Cut (1) 4 ½” x 4 ½” square

From Sky:
Cut (16) 2” x 2” squares

From Shadow:
Cut (4) 4” x 4” squares
Cut (1) 4 ½” x 4 ½” square
Cut (16) 2” x 2” squares

Half Square Triangle (HST) Assembly:

{Step 1} Using a marking pen or pencil and a straight edge, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of 2 Shadow squares (4” x 4”).

{Step 2} Pair each marked Shadow square (4” x 4”) with an Amazon square (4” x 4”), right sides together.

{Step 3} With the marked square on top, sew ¼” away from either side of the marked line. Do this for both pairs.

{Step 4} Using scissors or a ruler and rotary cutter, cut the sewn pairs along the marked line and press open to reveal the HST unit. (4 total)

{Step 5} Trim each HST unit to 3 ½” x 3 ½”. Line up the 45 degree angle line on the ruler with the center seam of the HST unit to ensure accuracy when trimming.

Quarter Square Triangle (QST) Assembly:

{Step 1} Using the HST method described above, make 2 HSTs from 1 Shadow square (4 ½” x 4 ½”) and 1 Amazon square (4 ½” x 4 ½”).

{Step 2} Trim the HSTs to 4” square. Line up the 45 degree angle line on the ruler with the center seam of the HST unit to ensure accuracy when trimming.

{Step 3} Using a marking pen or pencil and a straight edge, mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of 2 Shadow squares (4” x 4”).

{Step 4} Pair each of the marked Shadow squares with a HST (4” x 4”), right sides together. Make sure the drawn line goes in the opposite direction of the seam line of the HST.

{Step 5} With the marked square on top, sew ¼” away from either side of the marked line. Do this for both pairs.

{Step 6} Using scissors or a rotary cutter and ruler, cut the sewn pairs along the marked line and press open to reveal the QST units. (4 total)

{Step 7} Trim each QST to 3 ½” x 3 ½”.
·         To trim accurately, find the midpoint of the QST by taking the measurement of the unfinished unit and dividing by 2. (For our 3 ½” x 3 ½” unfinished unit, this number is 1 ¾”.)
·         Find the intersection of this number (1 ¾”) on your ruler. Place that point directly over the center point of your block, aligning the 45 degree angle with one of the seam lines.
·         Trim the excess fabric on each side. Rotate the block and repeat.

Pinwheel Assembly:

{Step 1} Use the 4 QST units to assemble the center pinwheel following the diagram below.

8-Patch Assembly:

{Step 1} Using 4 Shadow squares (2” x 2”) and 4 Sky squares (2” x 2”), assemble the 8-Patch following the diagram below.

{Step 2} Repeat Step 1 three times for a total of 4 8-Patches.

Berryburgh Block Assembly:

{Step 1} Assemble the block like a basic 9-Patch following the diagram below.

You may have noticed that my tutorial is shown in the blue colorway and my actual block was made in the purple colorway. I did that specifically so you could see the block both ways! Truthfully, Berryburgh block would look great in a lot of colorways! The block would also look great using prints. You could use this block in a sampler quilt or make an entire quilt with this one block. There are so many possibilities!
