WIP Wednesday - All Over the Place

I normally work on one project at a time. I'm a mono-quilter. I relish each step of the process and I enjoy taking things one step at a time from conception to completion... or maybe just to completion of a quilt top. (I rarely quilt and finish my tops, but that's another post.)

So, I've found myself in a bit of an awkward place. I'm working on four different projects at once! I was cutting fabric for one project and it was just too easy to cut fabric for a second project. Then one thing led to another... Now, I've got four projects in various states of completion.

It's not so bad, really, except that my work space is seriously crowded and sometimes I don't know what to work on for the day. Indecision, I know thee well.

First up is my Dutch Darlings quilt top. Dutch Darlings is a new pattern that I'm testing for Cristy Fincher. All I have so far is my fabric pull for the project.

I'm not behind... yet. I will be if I don't get a move on! Seriously, I should be working on this one now instead of writing up this post. I can't decide if I'm just being a responsible blogger or procrastinating. Probably the latter.

Next, I've had this pull of batiks out on my table for over a month!

I have a plan for these and the background fabric is all cut out already. That's why I'm counting this as a WIP rather than just a project pull. It also counts as a WIP because it's taking up space on my work table.

I'm also working on this fun quilt block.

It's for a quilt pattern called Adam's Rib, designed by Toby Jacobson for Fons and Porter. I modified the pattern slightly to fit my needs. Anyway, keep an eye out for this one; I'm excited about it.

Last, I'm working on a HRT (Half Rectangle Triangle) quilt top using these fabrics plus some black and white.

I wish I had some pictures of the HRTs to share but at this time of year the best lighting in my work space happens right around dinner time. Which means I'm always too busy at that time to take photos.

So, yeah, four projects at once. I feel like I'm all over the place. Do you work on multiple projects at once or are you a one-at-a-timer (a mono-quilter) like me? If you do work on lots of stuff at once how do you keep track of it all?

  1. I love your term, "mono-quilter!" Very descriptive :) Great fabric pulls, can't wait to see your WIPs as more "P" for Progress is made!

  2. I'm the opposite--I find working on only one project too boring! The good thing is that I get a lot done. The bad thing is that there's always a mess. Love your fabrics!

  3. I always have multiple projects in all phases going at the same time. I have some in the cutting stage, some in the piecing, some in the trimming...you get the point. Probably about 12 give or take a few. I like having the option of what I want to work on that day. It keeps the stress of "having" to finish something away.
I love the fabric pulls btw. Lovely colors. :)

  4. There are always lots of quilts in progress here! Since I am a hand quilter, it takes a long time to finish some of them. In the meantime, I enjoy having projects in various stages so I can choose what to work on depending on my time constraints, my mood, etc.

  5. I am a mono-quilter and I loved this post. I was nodding my head with all your reasons for working on one project at a time. It's always tempting to start something new and every new idea I have has me wanting to drop everything to work on it. I've tried having a few projects going at once before and found that the projects that got put aside were hard to get back to because I'd lost focus on them and lost some enthusiasm as well. Looking forward to seeing your completed projects.

  6. I actually used to hate having multiple projects going at once but now feel like I work better with more projects ongoing. I think it is interesting to see how that has changed for me. You have some fun projects planned and it will be neat to watch them evolve.

  7. I am a mono-quilter like you! If I do have multiple quilts/projects going at once, for the best productivity I keep them organized with bins or bags. I currently have one on the design wall, a cathedral window top hanging on a hanger in the closet and one my cutting table. :/ Happy Quilting!

  8. Oh, I have several, ok, a lot going at one time...guess I'm a multi-quilter! I like those ginghams in the last photo, what are those?

  9. I usually have several things going on in various stages, but I'm a huge lover of BOM. I'm trying to rein myself in a bit. It looks like you have a pretty good handle on your projects. I'm loving all of the blue fabrics in your various projects. Oh, and welcome, my friend, to the multi project club :)

  10. I am happiest when I have something in the piecing stage, a quilt on the longarm, and one at my chair for binding. Usually I can't get that much going at once, but I do like to try.

  11. I typically have a number of projects in different stages of completion on the go at any given time. Sometimes I think it would be so much more effective to work on one thing at a time, but I sometimes I'm not in the mood to sew on a "priority" project and need something else!
